Autism Doesn't Define Him!
Autism Doesn't Define Him!
He sees things a little differently. He has Autism, but that doesn’t define him. Some people think he’s kind of strange. While other “mean ones” call him names. They point, they laugh, they often stare. They act as though he’s not right there. He repeats words; he “stems;” and/or “perseverates.” He walks on his toes; He doesn’t like to wait. If you change his daily routine, he’ll likely act out. Sometimes he exhibits an unexplained shout. But if you look in his eyes, you’ll see that he’s real. No hidden agenda, nothing to conceal. Doesn’t know what it means to be shy. If you walk by him, he likes to say, “Hi” (over and over). He may get too close; he may give you a hug. Some people get mad, while others just shrug. He has a great big heart. Get to know him, you’ll see. His diagnosis is Autism, but Autism define him!

The Story of a Boy
Metaphorically, gagged and bound
His voice makes limited sounds
His voice is blind
Yet spoken thoughts converse in his mind
Plots to unbind
Dreams of his speech and spoken words
Are these thoughts absurd?
He bears witness to those who take for granted their speech
His dreams of vocal expression, out of reach, for now
Metaphorically, gagged and bound
His voice makes limited sounds
His voice is blind
Yet spoken thoughts converse in his mind
Plots to unbind
Dreams of his speech and spoken words
Are these thoughts absurd?
He bears witness to those who take for granted their speech
His dreams of vocal expression, out of reach, for now
He temporarily finds his voice in a SCREAM
Why does everyone frown while he beams?
They want to drown the voice he has found
They want to bring him DOWN, Down, down
If the tables were turned, and it was they who yearned to find their voice
Perhaps they would see the beauty of a scream
And/or attempt to discern what it may mean
I believe the boy is finding his voice, a little more each day
Maybe tomorrow, he’ll have more to say

June BLOOM, June gloom
June Bloom:
Mila graduated Newport Elementary School.
* This school is one of two in the nation that is located directly on the Beach with the play structure for the students on the sand.
A few of her favorite memories are: Seeing dolphins on her first day of school, getting out of class to watch the whales be redirected (as they were getting too close to shore), pigeons walking in and out of class, and a beachside graduation.
Mila auditioned and made one of 50 spots in an exclusive Musical Theatre Conservatory for junior high school.
Christopher won a "Student of the Year" award at his school in Occupational Therapy.
Christopher finished his first season of Spirit League baseball, 2012 Division 2 Dodgers.
JUNE gloom: :(.
Mila was heartbroken to leave the school she had come to love.
